Will we qualify for the Champions League?
If GSB pull this off they will consider themselves vindicated considering the promises they made, and what if we do a Leicester this year and win the big one, will all be forgiven?

It is also theoretically possible, to finish 4th in the league and have NO European football the following season.

Re: Will we qualify for the Champions League?
Champions League prize money is distributed based primarily on performance, with teams rewarded for winning matches along the way to the final.
Finish Prize money
Winner $22.5 million
Runner-up $18 million
Semifinalist $14 million
Quarterfinalist $12.5 million
Last 16 $11 million
Group-stage win $3.2 million
Group-stage draw $1 million
Qualifying for group stage $18 million

For example, each team is given $18 million (€15.25 million/£14m) for reaching the group stage alone, with each group stage win worth $3.2 million (€2.7m£2.4m) and a draw earning $1 million (€900k/£800k).
Reaching the last 16 of the competition is worth $11 million (€9.5m/£8.5m) per club, while progression to the quarterfinals brings earns a further $12.5 million (€10.5m/£9.5m) per club.

anyone know how much CL qualification is worth?
same with Europa league?

the additional prize money must be way ahead of what they had budgeted for. against last season you are looking at an additional £13m.

Qualifying for the CL changes the perspective of a football club and ramps up the pressure of G&S to start acting in such a way as to demonstrate that they are fully committed to taking the club forward and pulling it into a period of being a 'proper' football club.

By that I mean, firstly, investment in the squad comparible with what is ahead. A PL campaign, two domestic cups and a major European cup. They will need to be looking at getting in, I would say, at least 5 to 6 players. All of whom need to be of high quality. It may be that they also need to get 2 or 3 more squad players on top of that. All of that will involve a lot of investment in transfers and salaries.

I would also suggest that they would need to tie down our best existing players. Coufal and Soucek will be in demand. I have no doubt come the summer we will be receiving big offers for their services. We know the hype around Rice. Ogbonna could well demand an improved contract? If we qualify for the CL, as a club we need to be saying to our players that the club is committed to this and want them to stay. You do that by better contracts.

Therefore, we qualify for CL and all of a sudden the spotlight is on G&S. The right action and approach will be demanded and rightly so. The media will also very keen to see how they react and respond to CL qualification. The pressure will be on. And they do not like that. They like to be in the spotlight when it suits them. And this won't suit them.

A professional, efficient and substantial response will be required. And seeing as professional and efficient are not two words generally associated with those two I would suggest its not something they will be looking at with relish. The demand will be high and they do not like to be pushed.

Moving ahead, you start to get better players in. A player of much higher level and professional standards. Players that potentially have been in and around clubs involved in CL football. They also demand high levels of facilities and coaching. The logistical issues and investment in this will fall to G&S. Again, not something G&S bring or have the experience to.

Qualifying for the CL is to many the holy grail. But with that comes huge financial and logistical challenges. I don't think they are up to it and I guess neither do they.

Sullivan moaning about travel expenses to Everton for a cup game is something that niggles me and also adds weight to my points. Travel expenses to Everton? We could be playing in Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Greece....I wonder how G&S will react when they see those travel expenses!

If we finished 5th we'd need Liverpool or Chelsea to win the Champions League and finish below us for us to qualify.

Re: Will we qualify for the Champions League?
If City win the Champions League, 5th will be enough to secure a CL place next season

No it won't.

A country only gets an extra champion's league place (5 maximum) if the Champion's League winners, finish outside their league qualifying places.

Were the Champions League and Europa League winners be from the same country and outside Champions League qualifying places, only 3rd would qualify for the Champions League

Re: Will we qualify for the Champions League?
Block mate this could be a start of "something big" . Put it this way Bolton are down in the dumps because they didn't want to take the next big step when Big Sam wanted them to spend money to "push beyond"the top 6 position. He left them ( saying the then board lacked ambition) and the rest is history - good riddance I say they should have gone down in the 2002-3 season instead of us!

I had a look what points the 4th placed team have finished on the last 5 seasons and it's between 66 - 75 points, so not much of a guide really. But fancy this year it could be near the lower end?
